Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent development escalates the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he will create other ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
