Citizens have assembled around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The source said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance provision
  • Post-war management of the territory

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli shelling continued.

"When the dusk comes, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
