NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he said.

A Contentious Issue

During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
