No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
