Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest success of his career by rallying from a set down to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's initial success over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Huge. So big for me," commented Norrie, who becomes the fifth UK male player in history to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the closing months of the year. To achieve a win like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and likely the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which was the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's developing career.

Contest Analysis

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently to a win in the beginning as he eased in the first set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into the match by serving with greater precision and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding points. His relentless steadiness and dependability steadily took its toll.

Through most of the battle, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The rising talent appeared particularly uncomfortable hitting his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, sustaining his consistency, athleticism and power throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to force himself forward and strike effectively.

After battling for an extended period due to a major physical setback and difficulties with his game, the tennis professional slipped as far down as No 91 this season. After making the quarter-finals at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam second week after that, this win reinforces the veteran's development as he seeks to come back to the top 20 and further. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his remarkable success, is has not yet master how to display his finest performance in indoor conditions.
