Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
