The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
