The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
