Jokic won the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee while the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The star player was hurt towards the end of the second quarter in an inadvertent coming together with teammate Jones.

Jones stepped on the footwear of the MVP, and he immediately fell to the ground holding his leg.

The veteran player, that tops the league season in rebounds and dimes, posted 21 points and eight assists in the contest before suffering the setback.

Jokic is scheduled for an MRI scan on the following day to determine the severity of the problem.

"Right away, he understood he was hurt," said Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Whoever who suffers an injury, that's difficult, most notably a player as talented as Jokic. We will know more tomorrow."

"The team will adjust together. Clearly, at this moment, I'm more concerned about him personally and the frustration of facing something of that nature."
